Abstract
Living in a beauty conscious society, the mouth, a focal point of the face, plays a major role in how we perceive ourselves and in the impression we make on the people around us. Esthetic perception varies from person to person, being influenced by each person's personal experience and social environment. In the process of providing esthetic treatment for a patient, one should not only rely on one's eyes and personal perception of beauty, but also be guided by the patient's desires. Hence, the measurement of the perception of beauty in dentistry is fundamental for providing scientific data that can guide diagnosis and treatment planning. This study aims at evaluating the changing trends of esthetic dentistry with the perception of people. The study using a visual pictorial questionnaire was conducted among 100 students of Nair Hospital Dental College, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India in February 2013, consequently repeated in October 2013. The scores were averaged and calculated to record the probability prevalence of the same. A marked shift from the conventional principles of smiles design has been witnessed showing a changing perception of people contrasting to the esthetic norms. An equal importance needs to be given to the patient's desire combined with the dentist's knowledge and experience of esthetics to deliver efficient and appreciable esthetic outcomes. Abstract
The objective of the study was to investigate the attitude and assess to the knowledge of complete denture wearers and dentists toward denture adhesive and to initiate awareness for the same. A questionnaire was mailed to 850 dentists out of which 456 dentists replied. Three hundred and sixty-two complete denture wearers were surveyed with a different questionnaire in the department and were assessed for awareness and usage of denture adhesive. The results of this survey indicated that 66.89% of dentists used denture adhesives in their practice. Complete denture wearers lack awareness regarding use of denture adhesives as 74.5% of them had never tried denture adhesives. Majority of dentists are also unfamiliar with their beneficial effects. It should be emphasized that denture adhesives can be considered as a beneficial adjunct to improve fit, comfort, and function of dentures, and psychological security of patients when indicated in schools of dentistry. The knowledge of the patients will always depend on the knowledge of the dentists and how well the dentists educate their patients. The outcome of this survey demonstrates that the rate of knowledge of dental practitioners and patients toward denture adhesives has not been in a good situation. Abstract
Evaluate the effect of outdoor weathering on color stability of silicone and heat-cure acrylic with two different pigments. Total of 80 circular disk specimens, 40 silicone elastomer and 40 heat-cure clear acrylic resin were fabricated in the prepared mold and two dry earth pigments burnt sienna and cobalt blue was added to the specimens and it was subjected to simulated outdoor weathering. Before and after weathering, CIE values of both control and weathering groups were recorded by using spectrophotometer and tabulated. The obtained data were subjected to statistical analysis. Silicone elastomer with burnt sienna showed more color change when exposed to weathering followed by silicone with cobalt blue. Heat-cure with cobalt blue had shown some color change, heat-cure and burnt sienna were the most color stable. From the study, it can be concluded that heat-cure acrylic resin with burnt sienna most color stable than silicone elastomer. Lekha K, Kumar HD, Meshramkar R, Nadiger RK.
